Why Us

Why Soy Wax?

The greatest advantage that Soy Wax brings to the table (or the candle, if you will) is that it is completely renewable. While petroleum reserves continue to decrease, paraffin prices continue to increase.  The only limit to the soy supply is how much the sustainable soy bean farmers in Indiana, Iowa and Illinois are able and willing to grow.

A well-made soy candle will burn cleaner and slower than paraffin candles, it will also retain the color and scent longer than paraffin. IvyShine soy candles have greatly reduced soot emissions, comparably, and greatly increased burning time and illumination, all the while sporting enhanced scents and appearance, therefore increasing the enjoyment of the candle.

It’s my promise to make only the best, clear conscience candles that we can make.

Why Recycled Containers?

The Earth is not ours. We are merely borrowing it. And, up to this point we’ve kind of made a mess of it. It’s our responsibility to clean it up (or at least not make any more of a mess) before we have to give it back. I am devoted to using Reclaimed, Repurposed and Recycled containers when and wherever possible for my Ivy Shine candles. It reduces our footprint and makes a tiny step in the direction of a better and cleaner tomorrow.

Meet Ivy

My name is Ivy Shinkle, founder and force behind Ivy Shine. I am a candle maker by trade, but more so, in my Heart, Soul and Spirit. I've always loved candles, often saving my allowance as a child to buy treasure candles at specialty stores in Denver and Dallas. Perhaps it goes all the way back to our origins as early man, but there is something about a burning flame that intrigues us and beguiles us as humans. Fire gracefully fuses equal parts danger and chaos with beauty and mystique. And, fire not only warms us on a brisk winter night, but can also in the same flicker, light and warm the human spirit. Candles have been used for work, prayer and decoration since the beginning of civilization. So, as I am an old soul it only made sense to reconnect with my long lost passions: the Wax, the Wick and the Flame.

I began making my “Wish Candles” in my home, in Beverly Hills in 2009!   The inspiration to craft these little treasures came from a friend of mine in Denver who happens to LOVE candles. For years, she burned a candle in every room of her house, almost all day long! Her two-year old son became very ill and no one, including the doctors could figure out what was wrong. After more research the doctors finally discovered out it was, in fact, lead poisoning that had made her son sick. However, it wasn’t from the pipes or the paint on the walls…it was the candles!

The truth that candle manufacturers don’t want you to know is that a lot of mass candles on the market, are comprised of paraffin wax and other additives and are wicked with lead or zinc wicks. Paraffin is the solid form of methane, an asphyxiate, and when burned the gaseous fumes displace oxygen in an enclosed space. Exposure to lead can cause a variety of health problems. Additionally, many wicks are now made with zinc. Burning zinc creates zinc oxide, which with prolonged exposure can produce metal fume fever.

So having always been crafty myself, I vowed to make clean burning candles that are not only friendly to the eye, the nose and the senses, but Earth friendly, as well. And, lo and behold, Ivy Shine Candles was born – amazingly attractive and affordable decorative candles that combine the advantages of aesthetic beauty with safety and health for us… and the environment.
